Graphite is the most important additive to iron powder and it must be in the form of fine natural flake graphite. Graphite powder is added to metal powders to help powder compaction for sintering applications. Lubricants for iron powder are usually mineral oils or fatty acid compounds such as Zinc stearate, Lithium stearate, Stearic acid and Synthetic wax lubricants.

Binders may include water soluble polymers Hydroxyethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol.

Another related material is magnetite or black iron oxide. Magnetite is sometimes used as a substitute for iron powder when a magnetic powder is needed. Iron minerals mainly in the form of black iron oxide also known as magnetite is a substitute for iron powder in some magnetic related applications.
